The Design

Vision3000 is a product that aims to stimulate engagement and interaction through the form of a touchscreen table installation. Through this product we hope to aid developers in making decisions that are best for preserving natural heritage as well as the needs of the citizens who live in the area. The product has three main components which includes an interactive timeline, seeing other people's work and making their own sustainable area.

Wonder

Within background research it was revealed that people were interested in managing and conserving the natural environment however they did not have the opportunity or knowledge to contribute. Through the utilisation of survey respondents and interviews we found that

Individuals need a way to help that does not extensively disrupt their daily routine.

Individuals rely on green spaces and close connection with nature to promote better wellbeing

Motivation to participate in conservation comes in the form of ownership

Individuals are not broadly aware of the opportunities to participate and are not educated on the importance of doing so

A sustainable future relies on creating resilient natural ecosystems in urban areas

We then asked “How might we create a sense of belonging for urban citizens in future sustainable cities to ensure they take ownership in maintaining and managing natural heritage”

Explore

Based on this research we than began user testing and prototyping our ideas. This allowed for us to refine and scrap any ideas or merge them together to come up with a solution to our problem area. This then lead to a heuristic evaluation to decide on our final ideas.

Make

This concept provides users with the cultural history of their local area and how it has diminished over time due to Sydney’s rapid urbanisation. In turn, this provides an educational experience that they can apply into their own space giving a greater sense of contribution and respond greatly to the call to action.

Heritage Catcher is a citizen science game where users capture plant images to support research on natural heritage. Initial testing revealed positive user engagement with gamification elements, but highlighted issues with scanning clarity and navigation icons.

GreenerWe is an interactive screen at community gardens, helping urban citizens engage in natural heritage preservation through task selection and feedback. Initial testing highlighted positive user responses to task management and feedback features, with suggestions for clearer visuals and future concept development.

InviroGlimpse is an interactive timeline showing historical changes and future development options for a space, allowing users to leave feedback to governments and developers. User testing highlighted interest in the concept but suggested improvements for clearer instructions on feedback and a more dynamic timeline showing detailed changes over time.

Based on all the available criteria, Enviroglimpse scored highest across all concepts. Furthermore, we were confident that we would be able to complete this concept to the highest degree compared to the others.

For Vision3000's timeline, we needed to make the clickable points clearer so users know they can interact with it. They also didn't understand they can drag the timeline. Making icons bigger and adding clearer context would help too. Less pop ups would let users keep engage with the timeline.

The drag-and-drop section, lacked clarity in its initial implementation, leading to confusion among users who expected clearer instructions on the dragging action. Future iterations focused on improving about how the drag-and-drop functionality worked and expanding the selection of assets available for placement.

The installation of Vision3000 aims to create an immersive and community-driven experience. User feedback emphasized the importance of a wall display for personal creations and the desire for enhanced interactivity to foster engagement and a sense of community.

The timeline in Vision3000 underwent significant changes, notably featuring a specific area evolving over time through Photoshop. Future iterations aim to enhance historical accuracy with 3D recreations based on real photos, while improvements include larger pinpoints that display information seamlessly from a panel, and a draggable slider design inspired by Google's material design principles.

The mid-fidelity drag-and-drop prototype was improved with a higher fidelity background, a scrollable panel for assets, clearer instructions for dragging items, and a feature for uploading and animating creations on a wall display to enhance engagement.

Core Functionality

The home screen of Vision3000 provides an overview of its goals and community submissions, whilst the timeline allows users to explore historical and development contexts with interactive marks, enabling them to design and submit their own development ideas integrated with social media sharing.

The Impact

Vision3000 is a touchscreen table installsation that educates users about Sydney's cultural histroy and the effects of rapid urbanisation. It encourages local engagement and aims to influence decision making for preserving natural heritage. Unlike other products, Vision3000 focuses specifically on natural heritage and provides feedback to developers and councils, enhancing its impact in urban planning and community involvement.

This project had to be completed within tight time constraints resulting in it to be fast paced and having to make sure everything is still consistent and at a high quality. When something doesn't work out it's ok to go back to the drawing board and come up with an innovative solution. It's also important to create milestones to make sure tasks are being completed on time.
